For what is really wretched is loneliness, worries, problems, and the unfulfilled need for kindness and sympathy.

—Vincent van Gogh

I was already searching for flights on my phone.

“It looks like we have to fly to China and then catch a flight to Cambodia from there,” I said.

Xing stiffened next to me but kept her eyes straight ahead out the window of the car, her purse still clutched in her hands.

“Will we stay long in China?” she said, her voice too smooth and too void of emotion.

I scrolled down on my phone. “We’ll only be there a few hours.” Again, I was struck by how different this girl was from the one I knew in my dreams. Were they the same person, or was it something else entirely that forced her to appear in my dreams? Did I just think it was her, when it was someone who looked similar, but wasn’t the same at all? No, it was her—but a different version of her. A part of me wanted to put it down to chance, but that couldn’t be it. I would never get used to this world of powers I didn’t understand when magic altered everything that should be stable.

A text popped up on my phone from Mossi. “Hey, I’d love to see you tonight. Are you busy?”

I debated what to tell him, but I decided on the truth, or part of it. “A friend randomly decided to go to Cambodia,” I texted, “and invited me to come along. I wasn’t going to turn down a chance to see Angkor Wat. See you when I get back?”

“Absolutely.” He texted back. “See you then.”
